Today I had a very hectic day. I had been to one funeral and upon my way back got another news of a lawyer friend who was in critical condition at Civil Hospital.
One of our family relative Pulin Parikh, 42 years old died this morning. His entire Liver was damaged because of his excessive drinking habits. Doctors had already informed his family members that he was in his last stages nearly 3 months back - but his family tried every possible means to save him. They even went to Mumbai from Ahmedabad for treatment. Doctors in Jaslok Hospital Mumbai removed fluid from his spleen nearly 3 weeks ago and upon discharge from there he was very very sick. He couldn’t even stand tall after the operation. Pulin’s family brought him back to Ahmedabad and he was then shifted to Indus hospital, Ahmedabad. The doctors at Indus Hospital were more like a loot machine. Despite knowing the fact that the patient would not survive, they tried various treatments, later kept him on ventilator. He was given daily medicines of Rs 30,000 in injections, expensive steroids etc at Indus Hospital. Doesn't this sound too familiar? . The Doctor<->Pharma company nexus is so bad nowadays that poor patient is ripped off left and right. Look at all the disease’s and the terminologies that exists. All these names are just so that Pharma company can sell more drugs. One way or the other Doctor will find a disease in you and you will pay up for doctor visits and drugs. Loved ones will sell off everything and do whatever doctor says in false belief that doctors will be able to save the patient. In Pulin’s case family came to terms quickly and accepted the reality. They asked the doctors to remove ventilator and Pulin passed away in 15 mins after that at 11:30 AM this morning. He was an alcoholic and came from a very wealthy family. He was the lone son in the family. What will happen to his 2 young daughters? - one in college and one in tenth standard is still unknown. But Nikita -his wife and my cousin sister is very brave and my family is going to extend full support to her family.
While on the way back from funeral at 5:00 PM, I got another call from my wife. My lawyer friend, 30 year old - Dhaval Sheth was in critical condition in Civil Hospital. Dhaval had long history of having a low platelet count and this morning his WBC count was 200 and Serum Creatinine rose to 5. He was losing his Kidney function and because of less WBC, he literally had no energy left for any movements. While writing this, doctors are doing all attempts to see if they can bring the numbers back to normal.
In Dhaval’s case too the family had taken him to Vellore, Chennai for treatment and had spent over 14 lakhs already. His daily bills at Civil Hospital excluding medicine was Rs. 3000 and he has been admitted to the Civil Hospital, Ahmedabad for past 77 days.
So much is the loot done by doctors, that now you just don’t know whether you go to doctor to get cured or to give away your life savings.
