I had a recent incident where I hired Twinkle Christian in Gloscon as SEO Executive. Twinkle has Comp Science background and after passing out she joined an Ahmedabad based company in HR role. This was prior to her appearing for interview with me. In interview when I asked why she opted for HR role, she stated that programming was not her cup of tea.
Her resume has ton of spelling mistakes too but her spoken English was good. I thought that she had comp science background and with decent English, she can be groomed into a SEO/Content resource. Considering her past experience that lasted only few months and she had dispute in her previous company, I insisted that she signs a bond that she would stick around if we train her in SEO. She agreed and we hired her in company to put her initially as unpaid trainee and then on our payrolls. Detailed paperwork was done to ensure that this candidate shows stability.
She was put to sit next to our Drupal and SEO team. Few weeks later after joining us, she said that she wanted to do programming. I was taken a back by this statement because she was really swinging in what she wanted to do. I suggested that she focuses and sticks to SEO - this was the job she was hired for. One fine day she calls and says she is going to quit because she wants to do programming.
I called her in my cabin and gave her an option to start as .NET intern with Madmayor as we were to build Franchise Support System in .NET. She said "No". I asked her why? She said she found a job as a "Drupal Developer". I was furious that she just used my company and resources/manpower as a stepping stone to get her own needs satisfied.
I took her in front of everyone in my office and asked her few straight questions :
1) Why did you take up HR job earlier?
2) What is your title in your offer letter with our company? ("SEO Executive")
3) Does Drupal Developers in this company have title of "Drupal Developer"? Then why you have it as SEO Executive ?
4) Did you know of Drupal before you stepped in this company?
5) If you were not in Gloscon, would you land in Drupal job outside?
6) If you loved HR job earlier, then you wanted to do SEO, and Drupal now -- that too so many changes in 6 months, what would not make you find another option attractive elsewhere in the new company when you join them and you again call quits?
7) Do you ever talk ethics and giving back to company and community in your family interactions?
8) Why you had to deal with your prev company lawyers? Are you always a troublemaker?
9) Why you do not want to work in .NET if you love programming now?
10) Why should we not deposit your bond cheque as you have been doing this for sometime now.
One of the reason I have formed and invested in Reputa India is because I think in India there are too many job hoppers and troublemakers and one must find ways to curb this menace.
It probably was my fault that I thought of hiring someone who already had a dubious past. I certainly learnt a lesson as I did lose my cool in front of everyone in office on this act of Twinkle Christian.
